Mildred Lucinda Wampler, age 96, of Bloomington, died Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bloomington. Born April 1, 1917 in Monroe County, she was the daughter of John Henry and Ethel Cora (Hazel) Baker. She retired as a group leader at R.C.A. after 42 years of service. As a child she attended South Union Christian Church and at the age of 12, she walked from South Union to Clear Creek Christian Church to be baptized in their baptistry. Later, she moved her membership to Clear Creek Christian Church, where she is still a member. As a teenager, she liked to dance. It was at a barn dance that she met and fell in love with her future husband, Basil V. Wampler. They were married Nov. 5, 1932, when she was 15. Mildred was very talented with her hands. She liked to crochet, embroider and sew. She made 468 dolls by hand including Raggedy Ann and Andy, Annie, a little yellow-haired doll she named Millie, and a few Cabbage Patch Dolls. She also handmade and handquilted 36 quilts. Mildred always had a heart full of love for everyone and a smile on her face.
She is survived by her daughters; Patricia Washel Hanson, of Bloomington and Pamela Emberton, of Martinsville; ten grandchildren, James Washel, Jr., Douglas R. Washel, Gregory L. Washel, Stephen P. (Shelli) Washel, Ronald William Wampler, Rhonda (Judd) Barber, Candice L. Branham, Jennifer Branham, Michael Branham and Joseph P. (Amy) Branham; eleven great-grandchildren, James “Jayme” (Missy) Washel III, Giovanni Washel, Eric (Shannon) Washel, Joshua W. (Jennifer) Washel, Malissa (Kevin) Lane, Emma Lee Wilkerson, Cheyenne Branham, Scarlett Branham, Kelsey Wampler, Jacob Basil Wampler and Derek Curry; twelve great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Vernon Wampler, on April 9, 1996; two sons, Ronald L. Wampler and Mark S. Wampler, two sisters, Ruth Deckard and Wilma Kelley and one brother, Leonard Baker.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Day Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
