Mary Alice Jeffries, 97, of Bloomington, Indiana, formerly of Bedford, Indiana, and Fort Myers Beach, Florida, died December 29, 2014. She was born August 28, 1917, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and was the daughter of Jim and Ida Diable Stanforth. She graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1935 and was active in many school organizations as well as queen of her senior class. She also played in “A Prince There Was,” playing opposite Leo “Pete” Jeffries, who was her boyfriend and became her husband four years later on June 18, 1939. She attended Louisville Business School and was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority.
In 1983, she and Pete moved to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where they resided boating, fishing, dancing, traveling and especially meeting many good friends from different states. Mary enjoyed her Ceramic and Teddy Bear classes, where they made movable bears which they gave to migrant workers’ children for Christmas. In 1999, they moved back to Bloomington where they spent most of their time boating and fishing on Lake Monroe in the cove named after her, “Mary’s Cove”.
Mary and Pete belonged to Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother and sister. She was survived by her son, Jim & wife, Patricia; son, Dan & wife, Brenda; and daughter, Saundra & husband Curt; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on January 24, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church Chapel with Tom Ellsworth officiating with a reception following at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Season’s Hospice American Heart Association or Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.
