He was born on October 30, 1945, in Kokomo, Indiana, and was the oldest child of William Henry Stewart and Johnnie Marian (Ridley) Stewart. As a child, he was given the nickname “Butch” and is still affectionately known by this name to family and friends.
He graduated from Kokomo High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University Bloomington. He was a U. S. Army veteran and served as an operating room technician while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.
In 1969, James met the love of his life, Lydia Shirlene Hatcher, while she was out for a walk with her dog. They were married on August 29, 1970, in Kokomo, Indiana, and shared an incredible adventure together as husband and wife for fifty-four years.
During his career, James held several positions. However, he made his most significant professional contribution as a real estate appraiser and as the broker/owner of Stewart Appraisal Services. He took immense pride in the work he did as an appraiser and did his best to provide a fair and equitable value for each property he appraised.
James was the epitome of a lifelong learner and was still learning new things each day. He was curious and inquisitive and was always searching for answers to life’s most complex questions. He loved his family and cherished his friendships dearly. James worked hard to instill the power of God’s love and the importance of education in his children and grandchildren. He was a beautiful soul, and he encouraged his family and friends to pursue their passions and to live life to the fullest.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife, Lydia Stewart; daughter, Nicole Griffin (Donald, Jr.); son, Quincy Stewart (Kelly); grandchildren, Dexter Griffin, Langston Stewart, and Zora Stewart; sisters, Dietra Jackson (Dave Steur), Janeen Patterson, and Melanie Stewart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mark Stewart; brother-in-law, James Patterson; and nephew, James Brandon Patterson. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Monroe County Public Library, Opportunity House, WFIU, or your favorite charity.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Day & Deremiah – Frye Funeral Home, and a private graveside service will be held at White Oak Cemetery.
