Henry C Gulick

Henry Clayton Gulick died Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Meadowood Health Pavilion. Henry was born October 4, 1921, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Grover C. and Golda (Hall) Gulick. As a youngster, he studied clarinet in the Oklahoma City public schools and at Interlochen National Music Camp. Later he received formal music education at Eastman School of Music. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps Band in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he met his true love, LaNelle Garrett. Together they returned to Rochester where Henry completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic and Civic Orchestras (1948-1949). From 1949 to 1951 he was solo clarinetist with the San Antonio Symphony. In 1951 Henry accepted a teaching position at the Indiana University School of Music. Professor Gulick taught and performed there until his retirement in 1986. From 1952-1962, he served as chairman of the Woodwind Department. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, gardening (Men’s Garden Clubs of America), and grandparenting. He had a lifelong fascination with trains, and he eagerly awaited each edition of Trains magazine. Henry’s career included orchestral performances with conductors such as Sir Thomas Beecham, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, and Leopold Stokowski. He enjoyed writing for professional journals and was a recent contributor to the Meadowood Anthology. He was proud of and maintained relationships with many accomplished students. Henry was preceded in death by his wife LaNelle, sister, Yvonne Gulick Holman, grandson Burt Douglas, son-in-law Robert Douglas, brother Burl Gulick, and brother Bill Gulick. Survivors include son Douglas Gulick (Susan), of Ellettsville; daughter, Anita Douglas, of Bloomington; and son, Alan Gulick, of Louisville; grandchildren Beth Douglas, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Lydia Gulick Cuman (Andrea), of Padova, Italy; and Benjamin Gulick (Mollie), of Lawrence, Kansas; two great-grandchildren Irene and Christopher Cuman and several nieces and nephews. A memorial gathering will be held in the Terrace Room at Meadowood Retirement Community, 2455 North Tamarack Trail, Bloomington, Indiana, on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at 1:30 pm.
