George Anthony Calder, 90, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 5th, 1932 to Robert Calder and Regina Staknis Calder and died at Bloomington Hospital on April 2nd, 2023 as a result of heart failure.
He graduated from Prospect Park High School in 1949 and attended Temple University, graduating in 1953 with a degree in music. He served in the U.S. army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He then attended the Akademia für Musik in Vienna, Austria receiving a diploma in conducting. He then worked ten years in German opera houses in Mannheim, Dortmund, and Giessen as coach and conductor. At this time, he met and married the love of his life, Harriet Karlsond, opera singer, and their first child, Patricia was born in Mannheim. Their second child, Alexandra was born in Giessen. Their third child, Robert was born in Bloomington. In 1967, he joined the faculty of the School of Music at Indiana University, where he was manager of the Opera Department and coordinator of Instrumental Ensembles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Clement Barrie Calder, and by his wife, Harriet in 2016. He is survived by his brother, Robert Wesley Calder of Atlanta, Georgia. Also, by three children: Patricia Bentley of Denver, Colorado (husband Joseph), Alexandra Pike of Pasadena, California (husband Richard), and Robert Calder of Nashville, Tennessee. Also, two grandchildren, Hayden Pike and Charlotte Pike, and his best friends, Duke the dog and Mietze the cat.
