Doris Mae (Ferguson) Clay passed away peacefully Saturday, August 15, 2015 at IU Health Bloomington, Indiana at the age of 88. Doris was born June 7, 1927 in Monroe County to Fletcher and Frances (Wampler) Ferguson, was a lifelong resident of Clear Creek, Indiana and a 75 year member of Clear Creek Christian Church. Doris loved music and in her younger years, played piano for her father’s quartet and sang. Doris worked several years at RCA as a group leader, hairdresser and served 35 years as clerk and Post Master of Clear Creek Post Office. Doris was a loyal member of American Legion Post 18.
Doris is survived by her children Tracy Clay (Bobbi), Tala Clay, Monty Clay (Tara), Cindy Jeffers (Doug) adopted daughter Pam Noble, grandchildren Lesley Spatta (Ty), Allison Haskett (Sean), Stephanie Clay, Josh Clay, Monica Zucker (Ben), Ben Clay and Morgan Jeffers. She is also survived by brother Gary Ferguson (Arthur Berkley), sister Donetta Ferguson, twenty great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, best friend and cousin Margaret Stevens, and her favorite grand dogs, Cowboy and Bentley. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Metellus (Tal) Clay, parents Fletcher and Frances Ferguson, brother Jack Ferguson, granddaughter Jill Clay, grandson Clayton Jeffers, and great granddaughter Katie Farmer.
Doris was affectionately known as Grandma, Granny Clay, Dorie, Momma Clay, and Princess. She was in love with life, but most importantly she was in love with her family and friends. Doris loved everyone deeply and supported and encouraged others unconditionally. Her house was a safe haven for many who passed her way. She enjoyed having dinner with friends, reading, playing cards, cross word puzzles, and shopping. Doris most enjoyed sharing holidays and special events with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third Street, officiated by Dr. Allan Lewis. Interment will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Clay, Monty Clay, Doug Jeffers, Josh Clay, Ben Clay, Sean Haskett, Nick Lightfoot, and Ty Spatta. Honorary Pallbearers: Sam Wellman, Wayne Anderson, and Randy Lane
Memorial contributions may be made to Monroe County Humane Association and the American Legion Post 18 local veterans.
