Born August 25, 1927 in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was the son of Owen Joseph and Martha (Bryant) Martin Monroe. After the death of his father, when he was two years old, he moved with his mother and brothers to Patricksburg, Indiana to be near his grandparents as he grew up.
He attended schools in Jordan Village, Patricksburg and Solsberry High School. He was employed as a truck driver for BB&I Motor Freight, and as a dispatcher for Griffith Motor Express. He retired from Indiana University in 1993 as Pest Control Supervisor for Building Services after 27 years.
Don was a member of Faith Christian Church in Bloomfield, Indiana and also attended Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington.
He was married to Nancy H. (Fulk) Martin in Bloomington, Indiana on October 25, 1975.
Don is survived by his wife Nancy; 2 sons: Larry D. (Janet) Martin of Edgewater, MD; Matthew S. (Jill) Martin of Ellettsville, IN; step-sons: David W. Griffith of Solsberry; Michael D. Griffith of Bloomington; Rick A. (Shirley) Griffith of Bedford. Grandchildren include: Adam C. Griffith of Solsberry; Pvt. Benjamin D. Griffith of Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Haley N. and Ryan S. Martin of Ellettsville; Kristin (Craig) Wolf of Edgewater, MD; Tony Worley of Bloomington; 3 great-granddaughters. Also survived by one brother, Hershel J. (Lorrayne) Martin of Hendricksville; one sister, Virginia L. (Roy) Egan of Hendricksville; one step-sister, Evelyn May of Bloomfield; one sister-in-law, Billie Martin of Bloomfield and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Frank Monroe, and brother Leroy Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 1:00 PM at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary; with Pastor Henry Mann officiating. There will be an hour of calling prior to the service on Thursday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from, 4-8 PM at the mortuary. Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery in Greene County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or Faith Christian Church in memory of Donald E. Martin.
