Richard was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Weldon, to Harry and Mary Olson. On July 18, 1964, he married Rue Meyers in Bloomington. Richard had a long working career and had a variety of positions, such as carpenter, home builder, concrete finisher, school bus driver and business owner. He owned and operated Olson Construction, and only retired in his 80s. A World War II veteran, Richard bravely served our country as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, assisting in the Army Airway Communication System.
Richard was also a charter member of Chapter 250 of the Mended Hearts Association.
Richard is survived by his children, Catherine Cloyd, Bloomington; Karen (Ralph) Raulli, Mount Prospect; David (Cathy) Olson, Columbia, Mo.; Pamela Fuller, Bloomington; and Eric Olson, Seattle, Wash.; his grandchildren, Chris (Ginger) Cloyd, Bloomington; Jennifer Cloyd, Bloomington; Nicole Cloyd, Bloomington; Ashley Raulli, Mount Prospect; Amy Hyatt; Jeremy Olson; Sarah (Rodney) Litwiller; John (Carla) Olson; Rebekah Olson; Jon Olson; and Krista Serviss; and eight great-grandchildren, including Chase and Alex Cloyd, both of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rue Olson, and his son, Robert Olson.
A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington. A church service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran, 3516 White Eagle Drive, Bloomington. Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
