Evelyn Mary Richmond

Evelyn is the oldest of five children; she had two brothers and two sisters. She was born January 19, 1916 near Topeka, Kansas and grew up on a farm. After graduating high school at 16, Evelyn married her husband Cleon.

After Pearl Harbor in 1942, Evelyn and Cleon moved to Santa Monica where Cleon worked in the aircraft industry for companies such as North American. Later they were transferred to Long Beach and would settle to in the Torrance area. Richmond's family, including her parents and siblings would join her in California.

The couple had a son, Cleon Jr., who worked as a junior high teacher. He taught art, drafting, math, fine arts, and science. He was also the art specialist for Rialto schools.

The couple moved from Torrance to Rialto in 1970. "We moved to Rialto when we retired. My son had two daughters by then and we want4ed to be near them."

Both Hubbard and Pedroza enjoyed having their grandparents near by as they grew up and built fond traditions and memories with them.

The couple purchased a farm home in Rialto where they had a garden with vegetables and fruits.

After the passing of Cleon, Evelyn traveled overseas, visiting Russia, Scandinavian countries, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.

Evelyn also did volunteer work, working as a teacher's assistant for her granddaughter's classroom and as a cashier for 18 years at St. Katherine's thrift store.

Evelyn participated in a crochet club in Rialto, where she helped make afghans, lap blankets, caps, and scarves for the VA hospital and beanies for preemies at Loma Linda Hospital.

Six years ago, Evelyn settled in Grand Terrace to live closer to her granddaughter Pedroza.

Evelyn is survived by her two granddaughters Morai E. Hubbard, Lauron Pedroza; 2 nieces, Nancy Cole-Togneri & Louie Thayer; 2 nephews, Steve Beckman and Kevin White; 2 Great granddaughters, Paige and Ali Pedroza.
