Stanley Gray Watts, Jr., passed away at home Saturday, May 16, 2020, after a lengthy illness. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, he received his Bachelor’s Degree from Emory and Henry College in Virginia, and completed his graduate studies with honors at Mississippi State University. After graduation he taught history at Old Dominion University.
He later had a successful 40 year career as a cattle manager in Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, also serving on the American Angus Association Board for six years. He held many leadership positions, including Executive Director of the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Walker Watts; children: Katherine Watts (Byung Chun) and their children Julian and Elliana, Franklin, TN; Brandon Gray Watts (Wency) and their son Felix, Austin Tx; Daria Wilson (Stephen)and their children Grant, Jade and Lauren Wilson, Mobile, AL; Tara Strickland (DJ) and their son, Dade, Birmingham, AL; 4 brothers: Stephen Watts (Janet) of Wisconsin; Richard Watts (Debbie) of Virginia; Bob (Tracy) Watts of Florida, and Phillip Watts (Valerie) of Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Walker Ministry Scholarship, Samford Legacy League, Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229, Emory and Henry College, 30461 Garnard Drive, Emory, VA 24327 or The Angus Foundation, 3201 Frederick Ave., St. Joseph, MO 64506.
The service will be held at the Elmwood Chapel at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 20. The family will receive visitors at 10am. Dr. James Cooley officiating, Johns-Ridout’s Mortuary – Elmwood directing.
