Sara Polk Barber passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2022 surrounded by her loving family after a long illness. Sara was born in New Orleans and grew up in Polkville, MS, the youngest of five children. After graduating from Morton HS in 1957, she attended Mississippi College in Clinton, MS, earning her degree in Home Economics in 1961. She moved to Birmingham to become a clinical dietician and met the love of her life, Bill. They were married from 1963 until his death in 2012. The second half of her life she was known as “Skippy” to friends and family. She loved God, her family, dachshunds and Alabama football. She was a long-time member of Green Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Barber, her brothers, John Polk and Joe Polk, and her sister Jane Polk Peterson. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Polk Hale, sons Jud (Beverly) and Dan (Stephanie) and grandchildren Emily (Austin), Jacob and Sara Elizabeth. The family wishes to thank her loving caregivers Angela, Brenda, Cherrie, Tracey, Sherri, Tasha and Natalie as well as the nurses of Kabafusion who were so wonderful.
A visitation for Sara will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave Sw, Birmingham, AL 35211, followed by a a celebration of life service from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM. at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made at Children's Hospital or Big Oak Ranch.
