Peggy Ellis Fowler passed away peacefully Monday, June 29, 2020 at her residence at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Euna Ellis, her sister Mary McGraw, her husband of 48 years, Joseph Leland Fowler and her daughter, Susan Fowler Sessions. She is survived by her children, Daughters, Diane Hibbs (husband Gary) of Acworth, GA, Marci Fowler (wife Nancy) of Hartwell, GA, Sons, Marc Fowler (wife Sharon) of Waco, TX and Rusty Fowler (wife Merinello) of Germantown, TN, Step-Daughter, Meredith Holley (husband V.J.) of Tyler, TX and Step-Son Larry Fowler (now deceased) of Tyler, Texas. “Mimi” or “Grandma Fowler” has 9 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren.
Born in Wortham, TX January 28th, 1926 and raised in East Texas she played clarinet in her high school band and loved to dance the Jitterbug. During WW II she was a Bell Telephone Operator in Tyler, TX. She was also a skilled seamstress and fantastic cook and a devoted, loving Daughter, Sister, Mother, Aunt, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
After raising her children, Peggy worked until retirement at Hancock Fabrics in Roebuck, AL. Following the death of her beloved Leland she relocated to Dacula, GA, close to her Daughters, Marci and Diane. For the past 2 years she resided at Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Buford, GA.
Peggy can be considered a “Charter Member” of the Greatest Generation suffering the tragedies and the hard times and sustaining our country’s freedom through their self-sacrifice, ultimately realizing the opportunities for themselves and their posterity, well earned by that generation of Americans. Her courage and fortitude shown throughout her life and in her last days were examples for all future generations to follow.
Visitation will be at Ridouts Funeral Home in Birmingham on Thursday evening, July 2nd, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, with a graveside service at Forest Crest Cemetery Friday morning, July 3rd, at 11:00 am. The family requests that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Peggy Fowler.
