Lucy Merle Hardy Hethcox, born in Tallassee, AL on January 1, 1933, and a longtime resident of Talladega, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack B. Hethcox, parents, Joseph Paul and Lucile Sanders Hardy, and her brothers, Joseph Paul Hardy and David Sanders Hardy. She is survived by her daughters, Paula Gonzalez (Dr. Charles Gonzalez), Celia Dover Voorhees (Steve Voorhees); her grandchildren, Jessica Gonzalez Whitworth (Benjamin), Nicholas Gonzalez, Katherine Elizabeth Dover (Robert Hopple), and Sarah Beth Hudson (Fate Hudson) and eight great grandchildren (Charlotte, Cate, Nell, and Issac Whitworth, Violet and Iris Hopple and, Barrett and Jack Hudson).
Lucy met the love of her life, Jack Hethcox, in high school in Tallassee. They were married on June 8, 1952 and grew to be inseparable during their 66 years of marriage. They loved to travel together, visited most parts of the United States and travelled to the Holy Land, England, Scotland and Norway among other countries. They especially enjoyed their time in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Lucy was a devoted Christian and was baptized with her husband in the Jordan River during their travels to the Holy Land. Lucy loved the Lord and served the church in many ways – including teaching Sunday school at the Alabama Institute of the Deaf and Blind as well as at the First Baptist Church of Talladega. She served as a Docent at the Talladega Museum and was an active member in numerous community organizations. Lucy will be missed dearly by her friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at Johns-Ridout's in Birmingham (2116 University Blvd. Birmingham, AL, 35233) on Tuesday, November 21 at 10:30 am. Burial services will follow at 1:15 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery located in Montevallo, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be given in her memory to Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama or Lakeside Baptist Church.
