Louis A. Hereford, II passed comfortably following a brief illness on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Louis A. Hereford, Sr. and Anna T. Hereford on September 7, 1944. Louis attended school in New Orleans, graduating from John McDonogh High School in 1962 before going to college. He was briefly enrolled at Tulane University where he was said to have majored in “fun as a frat boy”, but went on to earn a Bachelors degree in Economics at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, currently known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL).
August of 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Anne Kirtland. Shortly thereafter, in December of that same year, Louis entered the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant where he trained as a Weapons Controller. Following his training, he did a tour of duty in Japan for one year. Upon his return to the states and being honorably discharged from military service, he enjoyed a long career with GD Searle Pharmaceuticals as a sales representative. In typical Hereford fashion, he wasn’t satisfied being idle for long, so he embarked on a “second career” with Just For Feet until the business closed and he then finally retired following a few years with Jos. A. Bank Clothiers.
Louis had a variety of hobbies and interests to include HAM radio communication, talking to people all over the world. He was an integral part of developing youth soccer in the Birmingham area in the role of Assistance Coach on his son’s competitive soccer team for many years. He also enjoyed running, music, and estate sale shopping. Of interest, as an avid music lover, he hosted a jazz radio show for a local college radio station at Samford University.
As an active member of his church congregation at The Cathedral of Saint Paul in Birmingham, Louis served as an usher and was also honored to serve as a sacristan. He was a kind and caring resident of his community, helping neighbors with errands and general upkeep around their homes. Affectionately known as Herf or Hereford to his friends and family, Louis was a personable and inquisitive gentleman who never met a stranger.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents Louis A. Hereford, Sr. and Anna T. Hereford. He is survived by his loving wife Anne K. Hereford of Birmingham, Alabama and his son Louis A. Hereford, III & wife Rhonda of Bossier City, Louisiana, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many caring friends and neighbors. Rest well, good servant.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022 from 9:00 A.M to 10:00 A.M. at St. Paul's Cathedral 2120 3rd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203 with a funeral mass following at 10:00 A.M. Burial will be at Alabama National Cemetery at 1:15 P.M., 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115
