Joyce F. Lawson of Hoover, Alabama passed away peacefully in her home where she resided for 56 years on September 17, 2021 at the age of 83. She was born on July 13, 1938 in Birmingham (Jefferson County). She grew up in Mulga, Alabama, then later moved to Docena. She met and married, her former husband, Troy D. Lawson on December 15, 1956 and they later moved to Hoover.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred E. Albright, her former husband; Troy D. Lawson, and her grandson; John Matthew Elliott. She is survived by her son, Barry R. Lawson; daughter, Cynthia L. Elliott Brown; grandson, Michael L. Elliott (Jessica); and great- grandsons, Jeremiah, Matthew and Greyson Elliott.
She attended Minor High School for a couple of years, but graduated from Misses Howard's School for Girls. She later attended Jefferson State College.
She retired from BellSouth Telephone Company with 20 years of service. Soon after her retirement she opened her own secretarial business.
She had a strong faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She had a tremendous passion for all animals. She would feed and nurture all of God's creatures. She would feed stray animals that strolled by her house and fed wildlife that lived in her backyard. She and her cousin, even once brought home a cat that she thought was a stray and kept him for a week only to find out a week later that she had "cat" napped someone else's pet. She did return him to his rightful owner.
She was known for her strong character, independence, an amazing "can do" attitude, sense of humor and intelligence. She was extremely dedicated to her family and gave of herself with unconditional love; never asking for anything in return. She truly was the glue that held the family together.
A public visitation will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021 from 1:00pm-2:00pm in the chapel of Johns Ridout's Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW Birmingham, AL. 35211 with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 2:00pm. Burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery. Pastor Joe Genau will be officiating. Ridout's Elmwood Chapel directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in the name of Joyce Faye Lawson to the American Lung Association.
