James Francis Skomurski, 74, passed away on the morning of December 9th, 2023 surrounded by family at home after battling a brief illness. He was born to parents Sgt. John F. and Yoshi (Nakai) Skomurski. He married his first wife, Ruth (Engler Skomurski) Jackson, in 1977 and together welcomed two children. In 2008, he married Linda (Rieger Rush) Skomurski, his partner and devoted nurse until the end.
A consummate learner, Jim earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and later an M.D. in Family Medicine. “Dr. Ski” practiced medicine until the summer of 2023. He was a treasured wellspring of medical and life advice to those that knew him. Seeing patients, precepting residents, playing golf, taking road trips, and enjoying family were some of his greatest joys.
Jim is survived by his mother, Yoshi, who he lovingly cared for with his wife, Linda; his brother Raymond (Yoshiko) Skomurski; his two children: Frances (Jordan) Smith, and Sean (Rebecca) Skomurski; as well as grandchildren, Jedediah and Abilene Smith. He also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Additionally, Jim is survived by his caring stepchildren: Molly (Doug) Stepansky; Anne Marie (John) Morgan; and, Natalie Rush; as well as grandchildren: Emilia, Nathan, and Lilian Stepansky; and, Eli and Sam Morgan. Jim is preceded in death by his father, John, and his first wife, Ruth.
The family would like to extend thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their care and support. A celebration of Jim’s life is being planned for the summertime of 2024, most likely in the Chicagoland area (details forthcoming). To honor Jim, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to your favorite charity.
