James “Kirk” Newell, III, 72 passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents James K. Newell, Jr. and Ruth Madelyn Newell. He is survived by his wife of 50 year, Mary Hollis Newell; son, Kirk Hollis Newell ( Jirapa); daughter, Sue Ellen Mohney (Pete); granddaughters, Katrina Leigh and Tara Rose Mohney and sister, Deborah Newell Burr (Robert). Kirk served in the Navy for 25 years, serving as Captain of the Bathyscaphe Trieste Submarine diving into the Cayman Trench. He was an Eagle Scout and a Sea Scout in Louisville, Kentucky. He was an Auburn graduate and received his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Kirk served on various boards at Cahaba Heights Methodist Church. The Newell family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Kirkwood by the River for their kindness and sensitivity. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 1-2 P.M. at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life following at 2 P.M.
