George R Reid

GEORGE RAYMOND REID, 88, Oneonta, answered the call from his Heavenly Father December 14, 2020 at home in Oneonta. He was raised in Graysville, Alabama and graduated from Phillips High School in Birmingham where he played basketball, baseball and football on the State Championship Team. He attended Auburn University on a football scholarship where he also played baseball. He played professional baseball in the New York Giants organization in the 1950's. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Birmingham Chapter. His special hobby for many years was beekeeping and serving as a member of the Alabama Beekeepers and Blount County Beekeepers Associations. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and Auburn football. He retired as a real estate broker in 1994. He has attended Carpenter's Ministries Church, Oneonta, Alabama for 12 years where he served in many ways and previously attended Life Church Birmingham, Trussville, Alabama for 25 years where he served as a deacon, teacher and Men's Ministries leader. He loved serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in everything he did. His life was an example to many. His love of God and family was a guiding force in his life. Predeceasing him were parents, George Earnest Reid and Crissie Starnes Reid, daughter, Amanda (Mandy) Reid, sisters, Lorene Reeves, Wilma Caldwell, Maybelle Douglas and Irene Mathews Love.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda Sheram Reid, his children, Larry Reid (Denise), Gina Brewer (Randy), Vicki Reid Morgan, Sim Reid, and Robert G. Reid (Minnie), numerous greatly loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister, Margaret Hulstead, and many special nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Services are at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel with visitation from 1-2 PM on Friday, December 18, 2020 with the service beginning at 2 PM, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Amelia Center, Birmingham, Alabama or the American Cancer Society.
