"Sweet Evelyn" was born in Luverne, Alabama, where she attended public schools before going to Auburn University and graduating in 1947 with a BS in Home Economics. A prerequisite to graduating, she told us, was wringing the neck of a chicken…it took her several tries, but she did graduate!
Evelyn married Carlton O. Lawrence in 1948. They lived most of their married lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised two children. Evelyn is survived by her son, Bill (Sherri) and Pam Holby (Pete), as well as two grandchildren, William (married to Emily) and Chris (married to Sarah Doss), and four great-grandchildren, Evelyn Beall, Walker, Liza Jane and Miller.
Evelyn was a member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She was active there until about ten years ago, teaching four-year-old Sunday School, was a member of the Opportunity Sunday School class, and served on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board.
When people talk about Evelyn, she is always described as “sweet” and “patient.” She may never have uttered a critical word about another person. To all her young friends (anyone under 70), she was known as grandmommy.
Evelyn’s favorite past-time was gardening. She kept a lovely garden behind her house, even after being bitten there by a copperhead. On that occasion (in her mid-70’s) she drove herself to the hospital and let us know she was there after she was admitted. She was notoriously self-sufficient.
The family is grateful for the support of three, longtime, dear caregivers, Cornelia White, Bernice Watson and Diann Carlton. Special thanks, also, to her doctors, especially Marianthe Grammas and Randall Davis.
A celebration of life service will be held at Bluff Park United Methodist Church on Friday, January 12, at 11 am, with visitation at 10 am.
