Edith Hogan was born on December 22, 1912 in Wylam, Alabama. She was the first child of William Joseph
Hogan and Ethel Lee Hogan (Thompson). Edith graduated from Ensley High School in 1929 and married Orbin Emery Thompson in 1935, settling in Shadyside. Two sons resulted – Orbin Emery Thompson, Jr. in 1938 and Donald Lee Thompson in 1943. After both boys were in school, Edith returned to the workforce as a secretary for the Social Security Branch office in Birmingham, retiring from the Social Security Payment Center in 1974 as a Claims Examiner. Edith’s husband Orbin passed away in 1971.
Edith married Joseph O. Stewart in 1980 and was warmly welcomed into Joe’s family. She and Joe lived in Hoover, Alabama until the death of Edith’s eldest son (Orbin) in 1998. Edith and Joe then moved into Orbin’s home in Trussville, Alabama. Joe Stewart died in 2006, at which time Edith moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to her son Donald, his wife Holly, and her grandson Richard (now living in Ashburn, Virginia). In 2006, Edith fell in her Brookdale Independent Living apartment and broke her right hip. After recovering from that surgery, she pushed a walker around until 2011 when she fell and broke her left hip. A wheelchair then became her primary mode of transportation, and she relocated to a Brookdale nursing home facility where she could get the higher level of care that was needed. Edith remained in this facility until her death.
Edith will return to Birmingham for burial. Viewing will be held at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel (800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL) on Wednesday, February 26, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A graveside service and burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday, February 27, at 11:00 AM.
