Dorothy Ann Shook Broom, age 84, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024. She was born in Sheffield, AL on April 16, 1940. Dorothy left Sheffield after High School and moved to Birmingham to attend nursing school. Dorothy went to nursing school at UAB and got her degree. She worked as a RN at UAB and was the head nurse in the first dialysis unit at UAB. She worked in dialysis for 25 years and another 25 years as an orthopedic nurse at Kirklin Clinic where she retired at age 70.She was an excellent nurse. Dorothy loved her family and was a devoted mother. She sacrificed and worked hard for her family. She was a single parent and dedicated her life to her child. She loved to read, walk, and travel. She was a member of First Methodist Church downtown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Lizzie Shook; her sister, Barbara Aycock; and her step-daughter Mary Dewberry.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Whitten (Sandy); her sister, Brenda Turman; and her step-children, Michael McCombs, Steve Broom, and David Broom.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Friday, December 13, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, followed by a celebration of life at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
