Donald attended High School at Cathedral College in Queens, NY. He then continued his education at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY, receiving a B.A. in Philosophy. He entered the United States Air Force in March of 1963 serving as an air traffic controller in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict. He left the service in 1969 having achieved the rank of Captain.
Mr. Mahoney resided in Safety Harbor, FL for 36 years until moving to Birmingham. He worked in management at Florida Power and retired from Verizon. He was also an adjunct professor of business at St. Petersburg Junior College. He served his community as a city commissioner for Safety Harbor and was actively involved in the development and construction of the Safety Harbor Library and a member of the Pinellas County Library Advisory Board.
His interests included music, literature, gardening, and curating Irish poetry and folk songs.
Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peg Mahoney; four children: son, Donal (Suzanne) of Ionia, MI; son, Sean (Danette) of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Maura (Eric) of Hillsboro, OR; and son Paul (Joyce) of Haymarket, VA; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, his sister, Mary (Ron) Davies, and a niece and nephew.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by John-Ridout’s Crematory in Birmingham, AL with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
