Bettye Gargis Freeman a resident of Hoover, Alabama passed away Friday, September 10, 2021, at the age of 92. Bettye was born on July 3, 1929 in Ford City, Alabama and is preceded in death by her mother Sarah Lucille Gargis; husband Dr. Robert H. Freeman Sr.; children Robert H. Freeman, Jr., James H. Freeman Sr. and Sarah Rebecca Freeman. She is survived by her children William Carter Freeman Sr. and Dr. John Carson Freeman Sr. (Sheila) and daughter-in-law Leigh Anne Gray Freeman; grandchildren Michelle (Randy) Waldrop, Bobby III (Veronica), James Jr. (Brandi), Alan (Victoria), Carter Jr., John Michael, Carson Jr. and Rebecca Freeman; great grandchildren Madison and Hannah Waldrop and James Robert, Paul and Adelaide Freeman.
Mrs. Freeman was originally from the Muscle Shoals area where she met her husband of 66 years as well as receiving her teaching certificate from Florence State Teachers College (UNA). She and Dr. Freeman moved to the Birmingham area in 1951 after Dr. Freeman was accepted into UAB Dental School. She was an integral part of the family dental practice for 55 years alongside her husband, Dr. Robert, sons Dr. John and Jim Freeman. If asked, she was the boss! Mrs. Freeman was a long time member of McElwain Baptist Church before moving membership to Green Valley Baptist Church where she maintained friendships and fellowship from both.
The family would like to thank Yvonne, Sharon, Diane and Nancy for their dedication and compassion as well as Compassus Hospice. You have all been such a blessing and have continually demonstrated The Lord's love and compassion.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 15th at 1:00 p.m. at Johns-Ridout's Elmwood Chapel with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. The service will be directed by Libby Potts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
