Allen M. Baker, Jr., born on February 26, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama passed away on September 22, 2021 at the age of ninety-one. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Allen M. Baker and Frances Wood Baker, his wife Betty Chism Baker, his son William Frank Baker, and his two sisters Jane Baker Driver and Barbara Baker Dunnavant. He is survived by his two living children and their spouses, Allen M. Baker III and wife Wini and Denisa Baker Sellers and her husband Bill, his five grandsons—Justin (wife Christen) and Jordan Sellers, Andrew Baker (wife Carey), Allen Baker (wife Emily), and Jeff Baker (wife Carrie), and twelve great grandchildren—Knox, Ann Tatum, Bradford, Avery, Malcolm, John Henry, Marshall, Graham, Lee, William, Lawson, and Annie. Allen was a 1948 graduate of Shades Cahaba High School, who played professional baseball for four years with the Boston Red Sox organization, and served our nation during the Korean War. Allen worked as a supervisor in the foundry of Stockham Valves and Fittings for over thirty years, and then, upon his retirement, nine years at the Sterne Agee Group. He had a simple but genuine faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a member of Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church. Allen was also a member of the American Legion. He loved fishing and playing golf with his friends. Betty, whom he married in 1951 and who passed away in 1997, was the love of his life and he often spoke of missing her kindness and wit. Allen is remembered by his family as a great provider and by his work associates as a very responsible, and hard working employee. He loved watching his sons, grandsons, and great grandchildren play basketball and baseball. He was a humble and kind man, loved and respected by all who knew him. A celebration of Allen’s life will be held on Monday, September 27 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Johns-Ridout's, Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Avenue, SW, Birmingham, 35211. A visitation for family and friends is scheduled from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on the 27th. Allen’s son, Dr. Allen M. Baker III, is to officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
