Alice was a native of Kinawley, County Fermanagh, Ireland, having been born sixth (of twelve) into the McManus clan/family. She studied and trained to be a registered nurse in Belfast and later worked in Belfast, London, and Toronto in that profession. In a scene evocative of a Hollywood movie, she met her husband Brian (deceased in June of 2010) in 1957 when he was recovering from a motorcycle accident in a hospital in Belfast. Romance and wedding plans ensued despite having different heritages which led them to seek a new life on the other side of the Atlantic. Alice and Brian were married in Knightsbridge, London, UK on June 26, 1959. After a short stay in London, Alice and her husband moved to Toronto, Canada, where they lived their first five years together. She then moved with her husband and growing family to the USA, living in Baltimore (MD), Reading (PA), Yorktown Heights (NY) and finally settling in Birmingham (AL) in August of 1980. Although she had lived in many different places, she was fond of saying, “Home is where my husband and family are”.
Generous of heart and devoutly Catholic, Alice was active in the religious community of Our Lady of Sorrows of Homewood where she exercised as Eucharistic minister on a regular basis as well as participating in other community and spiritual activities. She was also actively involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry for more than 15 years which addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families.
She is survived by her four sons Peter O'Hare (Catherine) of Birmingham, Brian O'Hare (Marta) of Barcelona, Spain, Crosby O'Hare (Alejandra) of New York, NY and Barry O'Hare (Lanier) of Birmingham, her 13 grandchildren Dillon, Amelia, Caitlin, Fiona, Maggie, Liam, Frances, Bridget, Manus, Dylan, Isabella Rose, Oriana and Kiera and by her four brothers Fr. James McManus (Perth, Scotland), Fr. Sean McManus (Washington D.C.), Frank McManus (Enniskillen, Northern Ireland) and Myles McManus (London, England).
She was preceded in death by her husband Brian, her granddaughter Shannon, her siblings, Patrick, Terrance, Mary Kate, Celia, Thomas, Arthur and Terrance and her brother in-law Jim Hare, his wife Freda and their son Curtis.
