Reverend Doctor Everett E. Bragg, II, age 76 passed away into Glory on January 15, 2019 in Raymore, Missouri. He was born in Danville, Pennsylvania on December 5, 1942. He grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, the eldest son of Dr. Everett Curme Bragg and Mary Bragg. He grew up in Queens and Dobbs Ferry, New York. He was a half-back on the Dobbs Ferry High School football team. He won a Merit Scholarship to Wagner College and also studied at Columbia University and NYU. He grew up Episcopalian and attended St. Barnabas Church.
In 1964, thinking he had no purpose in life, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served honorably until 1968, including one year in Viet Nam. When he first entered the service, he was confronted by an African-American Staff Sergeant named Al White, who asked him, “If you were to die tonight, where would you spend eternity?” He didn’t know the answer, so Al White told him that he needed to repent of his sins and receive and believe in Christ as his Savior. He prayed and was converted to knowing Christ personally and receiving His gift of eternal life. His life changed dramatically. He began studying and memorizing the Bible and received discipleship training through the Navigator military ministry.
He heard missionaries from New Tribes Mission speak at Maranatha Bible Camp in North Platte, Nebraska speak and dedicated his life to serve God as a cross-cultural missionary to reach a tribe in South America with the Gospel in 1969. He moved to San Diego, California with the Navigators military team. He met and married Sherrill Ann Hennings, who was also called to be a missionary, at Scott Memorial Baptist Church in San Diego, California on June 23, 1973. They raised three daughters and one son on the mission field in Peru, South America since 1979. He and Sherrill served with South America Mission for 21 years, 1977-1998. Rett earned a B.S. in Biblical Education from Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Oregon in 1977; Rio Grande Bible Institute Missionary Spanish Language School in 1979; an M.A. in Missions from Columbia Biblical Seminary & Graduate School of Missions in Columbia, South Carolina in 1993; post-graduate research studies at Oxford Center for Mission Studies in 2006 in the U.K. and an Honorary Doctorate from Kingsway University and Theological Seminary in Des Moines, Iowa in 2016. Rett evangelized, taught and trained indigenous leaders. He spoke fluent Spanish and the Asheninka languages.
