Kay was born on March 15th, 1938, in South Dakota, and moved to Washington at age 9, with her parents, Jeff and Elma McCormick, and younger sister, Pat, and graduated from Lake Washington HS in 1956.
Throughout her life, Kay was devoted to her family, friends and faith. She was a lifelong member and volunteer at Faith Lutheran Church in Redmond, and was an active PTA member during her children’s school years.
Kay was always committed to helping others. For many years she served on the Seattle Children’s Hospital Guild Association Board of Trustees. Kay’s service was ultimately recognized when she was elected President of the Emily Schawacher Guild for former Board Members, and was honored as a Life Member of the Hospital’s Guild Association.
Kay was an avid golfer and member of Sahalee Golf Club since 1969, where she served as Captain of the Women’s Division in 2003. Kay served on the Sahalee Women’s Board for 10 years and as the Seattle Women’s Golf Association representative for 14 years.
Her commitment to promoting women’s golf in the region was officially honored when, in 1999, she was elected President of the SWGA. Kay was also serving as the Honorary Chairwoman of the 2011 Women’s City Championship.
Kay was an avid sports fan, particularly Husky football, and an enthusiastic follower of her children’s and grandson’s sports teams. In 1972, Kay was also an original player on the Eastside’s first ever all female football team, the Redmond Sexkillers.
Kay reserved her greatest passion for her family, including her dog, Buster. She leaves behind her mother, Elma McCormick, sister, Pat Waddell, brother-in-law, Bob Waddell, son Garth Thomas, daughter Michele Rooney, son-in-law, Iain Rooney, as well as two grandchildren, Maxwell Rooney and Cole Thomas.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Tom, her father, Jeff McCormick, and her daughter-in-law, Ronna Thomas.
Everyone who knew Kay can recall the true greatness of her spirit and generosity. Through these memories, Kay will live forever.
Kay will be forever loved and missed by so many people.
