Janice Shan-Chen (Hu) Yuen, 73, died peacefully at home July 3, 2022, following a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on July 13, 1948, in Beijing, China, to Chao Tung and Ay Yung Hu and grew up in Taiwan. She studied at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei and won a piano competition that gave her the opportunity to study abroad. She moved to the US in 1968 to study at Cornish College of the Arts and then at Seattle Pacific University where she majored in piano performance and was known as “the girl with the million-dollar fingers.” She later earned a masters degree in piano performance at Central Washington University.
During an internship at Puget Sound Energy, she met Donald Yuen, the love of her life; they were about to celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary. After the Yuens married, they moved to Bellevue where they raised their daughter Tracy and where Janice taught piano for over 30 years. In addition to classical music, she enjoyed drawing, painting, gardening, and cooking, and she loved to travel, especially to Hawaii.
In addition to her husband Donald, Janice is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Noah Hugenberger of Burlingame, CA, and their two children, Adam and Emma. She is also survived by her three sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Raymond Yan of Bellevue, Judy and Louis Lee of Bellevue, and Debbie and Neal O’Doan of Yelm.
