Darcy Burns- Jelcz, cherished wife, mother, daughter, friend and community pillar, lost her battle with fallopian cancer when she died at age 55 of complications from a pulmonary embolism at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA on Friday, December 18th.
Darcy was a lover of dark chocolate, fuzzy robes, 80’s music to dance OR karaoke to and all the finest home furnishings which she shared with her doting husband of 23 years Michael Jelcz and 2 spoiled cats Max and Bella. Spoiling those she loved and even unknowing strangers gave her so much joy. She was born Darcy Lynn George on May 8, 1965 in Burnsville, MN. This probably comes as a shock to her as much as it did us! When verifying her records we learned otherwise as we always thought it was Duluth “don’t ya know!”
Enriching the lives of those around her began at a young age according to her Mother Sandra Parsons and Grandmother Evelyn Johnson (age 94) whom she leaves behind. She was born with a unique nurturing and calming kindness that effected every path she crossed. Darcy’s Stepfather Jim Parsons and her Stepmother Sherri Kroodsma are deeply saddened by the loss of their stepdaughter. Though they didn’t raise her, both loved her as their own. She joins her Father Robert George and younger Sister Stacey George in her passing.
One of the many ways she touched the lives of those around her was through her long successful career in banking, which began in 1984 at First Western Bank in Las Vegas, NV. Darcy worked her way up the corporate ladder through many job titles, bank mergers, and relocations. She moved to Sammamish, WA in 2006 to take on a role as Vice President Area Retail Leader for Key Bank overseeing branches throughout King County WA. This was an exciting yet challenging role which she excelled in. Darcy oversaw a program within the company in which she recruited college graduates throughout the state and helped them accelerate their careers in banking. She took pride in the manager associates' successes and enjoyed her extensive mentorships with them. Darcy delighted aiding in the success of others and pointing them on their career paths. Not only was she busy team building, she was also consistently a top performer in her region. Darcy valued the importance of teamwork and boosting up the confidence of others. This was reciprocated tenfold when her coworkers, friends and family helped pull her through the untimely death of her son whom ironically lost his battle with Ewings Sarcoma bone cancer in 2007 at the young age of 19. We know he was the first to welcome her into the gates of heaven.
After the death of her son, Darcy dedicated the remainder of her life to the American Cancer Society through her countless years of service to Relay for Life. She served as a board member of the American Cancer Society and remains one of the top fundraisers in the state of Washington. She worked tirelessly year-round participating in, organizing, consulting and overseeing Relay for Life events statewide even throughout her own battle with Cancer. Darcy was this year’s Seattle American Cancer Society’s virtual gala speaker in which she shared her experience strength and hope with thousands of viewers from around the world. Public speaking was always Darcy’s forte.
HOPE, FAITH and LOVE were words that held a special meaning for Darcy. She truly lived by this motto! It was evidenced by the insignia she kept in her surroundings but blatantly obvious by her way of life. Darcy loved to love and had more gratitude and forgiveness in her heart than the average person. She left an everlasting mark on all who knew her including her absolute pride and joys Grandson Grayson Pewitt (age 5), Daughter Kristy Pewitt and Son in Law Christopher Pewitt. Darcy would want nothing more than for us to honor her memory through a donation to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Her family asks that you use the link below to make donations in her name.
