Verna’s life was forever changed when Ross Day, an Air Force Veteran, came to her work at The Lunchbox to play the pinball machine. Verna and Ross moved to Odessa, Texas where their two children, Don and Debbie, were born. In 1957, Verna and her family moved to Bellaire, Texas so Ross could continue college. Here, Verna joined the Richmond Plaza Baptist Church, which became her second home.
Verna was a devout Christian and was always active in her church- singing in choir, duets, and in quartets. In the 1960’s, she sang alto with a ladies trio called The Gold Key Trio, who performed for other churches and went on to make a “long playing” record. Verna led numerous children’s choirs, volunteered at the library and sang duets with Ross and The Prime Time Singers, at West University Baptist Church.
In 1970, Verna began oil painting which turned into a great passion of hers that led her to teach art classes for over 14 years. Verna loved introducing others to the joy of art.
One of her favorite places to vacation was their family cabin on Lake LBJ in Kingsland, TX. Here, Verna enjoyed fishing, planting trees, and spending quality time with Ross, Don, Debbie and Danny. Verna loved life and was described as energetic, fun and people loved to be around her. She enjoyed planning parties and was always the life of the party.
