He was a long time resident of Houston, having attended Lanier Middle School and graduating from Lamar High School in 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Richard attended the University of Texas, receiving a BBA in accounting in 1950. He worked for Transco Energy, now Williams Co, for 33 years.
After retirement Richard and Violet enjoyed years of traveling around the United States of America, Europe, and Canada. He was treasurer of Life Enrichment of Houston for 15 years and an active member of Westbury United Methodist Church for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Lewis. He is survived by his wife Violet; step son, Michael L. Smith and wife Wendy; step grandchildren; Lindsay Boston, husband Kevin and great grandbaby, Charles, Rachel Cuttill, husband, Josh, Christopher Chapman, Kristen Smith and Edgar Martinez, nephew, Donald Lewis, great nephew, William Lewis and aunt, Edna Merle Lewis.
At the family request, there will be a private graveside service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, followed by entombment in the mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Westbury United Methodist Church UM Army.
