Mary died on May 11, 2016. Her parents were Samuel Bernard Jones and Mary (Mamie) Inez Dillon Jones. Mary had three brothers - Samuel Anthony Jones, Maurice Charles “Mickey” Jones, and Robert Dillon Jones.
Mary is survived by her 6 children: Harry Jewett III and wife Patti, of San Antonio, Margaret Jewett vanWagner of Houston, Kathy Jewett Shewmaker and husband Bob, of Farmersville, Charley Jewett and former wife Joanna, of Houston, Douglas Jewett and his wife Cathy, of Round Rock, and Laura Jewett and wife Karen Hendricks of Houston, Texas. Mary is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and one great- grandson on the way.
Mary lived at 524 Heights Blvd. from age 5 until she married Harry Berkey Jewett Jr. at age 22. They bought a home in West University Place and lived there for 12 years. They then bought a home in the Ayshire subdivision on Drummond and Mary lived there 52 years. She lived her whole life in Houston except during WWII when she and Harry were in Waco and Wichita Falls for a time. Mary and Harry divorced in 1981. Mary attended All Saints Catholic School, St. Agnes Academy and Reagan High School in the Heights. As a child and young girl, she loved to play with paper dolls on the big front porch of their home on Heights Blvd. She also volunteered in the local library restacking books at about age 14. She rode horses with an equestrian club and also played tennis in high school, where she was voted Most Beautiful Girl. Mary went to work at Joskes Department Store in the Galleria in about 1970. As a part-time worker, she was in various departments, but finally ended up working in women’s clothing. She worked there for 10 years. She became interested in politics and worked at her precinct voting place. She joined the Braes Republican Women’s Club in 1983 and held office in all positions for many years.
Over the years, Mary enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, bridge, playing Scrabble and working word puzzles. She was also an avid reader. Jeopardy was her favorite TV game show, and she loved Wheel of Fortune as well. Mary was a huge fan of the Astros. She followed them for many years listening to radio broadcasts, watching the team on TV and attending games in the Astrodome and at Minute Maid Field. She was a wonderful mother and friend to everyone she knew and will be long remembered and missed.
A memorial service will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 with a reception to follow.
