Karl was born on the 4th of October 1990, in Miami, Florida, to Klaus Gunther Utermohlen and Hilda Abreu de Utermohlen. Born of Dominican parents, he was raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he attended The International School of Santo Domingo. Karl moved to the United States at 16 to attend boarding school at Episcopal High School, in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in English with Writing Concentration. While in college, Karl was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and served on the college publications: The Mercury, The Gettysburgian, and the Gettysburg Review. In 2017 Karl obtained a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing, Nonfiction, from the University of Idaho. In 2019 he moved to the New York area, and then settled in Houston in June 2020, near his brother Eric and his family.
For the past six years Karl worked as a writer in the content creation space, focusing on marketing, AI, finance, app development and more. Most recently, he began working as Technical Writer for Cox Communications.
A loving son, grandson, brother, family member and friend, Karl cherished their company and friendship. He had a strong sense of honor and fairness and was a loyal and noble friend. He was a fan of sports, especially soccer and baseball. Throughout his life he loved listening to music and attending concerts with friends.
Karl is survived by his parents Klaus Utermohlen and Hilda Abreu de Utermohlen; his older brother, Eric Manuel Utermohlen his wife Margaret Louise (Meg) Jackson, and nephew Alaric; his younger brother, Franz Gunther Utermohlen; his grandparents, Osian Temístocles Abreu and Hilda Viñas de Abreu, and María Teresa (Teté) de Castro de Utermohlen.
The resilience and perseverance with which Karl faced cancer and the many challenges of life, will inspire his family and friends always.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 26, 2021 at 6:00 pm at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet St, Bellaire, TX. There will be a Livestream of The Celebration of Life, the link for which can be found below.

Karl Osian Utermohlen Abreu falleció el domingo 18 de abril de 2021, en su hogar en Houston, Texas. Tenía 30 años.
Karl nació el 4 de octubre de 1990, en Miami, Florida, hijo de Klaus Gunther Utermohlen y Hilda Abreu de Utermohlen. De padres dominicanos, creció en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, donde estudió en The International School of Santo Domingo. A Karl lo sobreviven sus padres Klaus Gunther Utermohlen de Castro y Hilda Abreu de Utermohlen; su hermano mayor Eric Manuel Utermohlen Abreu, su esposa Margaret Louise (Meg) Jackson y su sobrino Alaric; su hermano menor Franz Gunther Utermohlen Abreu; sus abuelos, Osian Temístocles Abreu Medina y Hilda Viñas de Abreu; y María Teresa (Teté) de Castro de Utermohlen.
La resiliencia y perseverancia con que Karl enfrentó el cáncer y los muchos desafíos de la vida, servirán para siempre de inspiración para su familia y amigos.
