Andrew Emery Hill died January 07, 2023, in Houston, Texas. He was born on February 21, 1935, in Houston. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Colvin Hill, his parents Andrew Elsbury Hill and Mary Frances Allen Hill, and a grandson, Zachary Womack. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Tanner Hebinck Hill, his eight children: Elizabeth Stanley (Robert), Margaret Womack, Andrew J. Hill (Mary Lynne), Catherine Hill, Michael (Dena), Teresa Flannery (Brian), David Hill (Jennifer), and Susan Iwanski (Edward), sixteen grandchildren, one great-grandson; his sister, Annette Sofka (Paul), brothers Roy Hill (Diana) and John Hill (Caren), numerous nieces and nephews.
Andy attended grade school at Blessed Sacrament and Holy Name Catholic Schools in Houston, and high school at St. Anthony’s Seminary (now St. Anthony’s Catholic High School) in San Antonio. He graduated in 1957 from the University of St. Thomas in Houston with a degree in chemistry, and subsequently began a long career in the oil and gas industry spanning more than fifty years. Beginning as a chemist, he rose to become Chairman and CEO of Hill Petroleum Company, an independent refining company in the U.S. which ranked among the largest privately held companies, as well as Chairman of the American Independent Refiners Association. He was well respected and consulted for many years on international energy projects worldwide. He also launched and supported various business ventures with friends and family from manufacturing to real estate interests, and approached every new challenge with the same optimistic enthusiasm and integrity. He will be remembered for his kind words, good deeds, and tremendous generosity as much as his sharp mind and great business sense. Andy was particularly generous with his time in sharing his business skills and was an active member of his church and community throughout his life, including St. Thomas More Catholic Church and School in Houston and St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Sugar Land, as well as joining a group of UST Alumni in helping Sr. Theresa Macy, O.P. establish a girls’ school in Guatemala. He served on the Boards of the University of St. Thomas and Strake Jesuit College Prep, and was particularly impactful in his work as President of the Board of St. Agnes Academy in Houston, for which he was awarded the inaugural Guardian of Youth Award. He will be greatly remembered not only for his achievements in his own life and career, but for the multitude of lives he helped to influence and change for the better through his generous work.
The family would like to thank the medical staff of Houston Methodist Hospital and his healthcare aides, Windy Huff and Gift Omoruyi, as well as the staff at The Tradition Senior Living – Buffalo Speedway community.
