Roy Wayne Woody Sr., age 80, of Joppa, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Maryland. He was born on August 10, 1943 in Coeburn, Virginia, and was the son of Roy Woody and Gladys (Hall) Woody. To many, he was known as either “Woody” or “Wayne”.
He attended college at Virginia Tech and Towson State University, graduating with an electrical engineering degree. In November 1965, at the age of 22, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed to Norfolk, Virginia and was assigned to serve on the United States Navy destroyer ship USS Willard Keith during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in November 1971 after completing his 6 years of active duty.
After completing his military service, he worked as an electrical engineer. Most of his years were spent working at American Bank Stationary. After he retired as an electrical engineer, he then worked for his son in law, Skip, working on PLCs and other electrical work for a few years.
In his spare time, Woody enjoyed woodworking, watching westerns, the History Channel, and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who meant the world to him. He always looked forward to his annual trips to Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Massachusetts and South Carolina to visit his family and friends.
Another thing Woody enjoyed was a good party, especially throwing one. He and his late wife Diann were known for their 4th of July parties in the early years, especially when he was in a rugby league, and they would always look forward to going to the regular rugby parties. They also loved to have their annual Christmas party at their house and giving each one of their guests a Christmas gift to thank them for coming and for being a part of their life.
He left us with a huge hole in our hearts when he left us, but our minds are overflowing with the great memories we have of him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Woody was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Diann Woody. He is survived by his sons, Roy Woody, Jr. and Richard W. Woody; daughters, Chris Harvey and Kimberly (Skip) Brown; brothers, Garry Woody and Ronnie Woody; grandchildren, Josh (Caryn) Harvey, Cory Harvey (fiancée Jenny Traylor), Dalton & Jessica Clark, Nathaniel, Christian, Gabriel & Benjamin Brown, Aaron Chesser, Shelby & Cole Woody; great-grandchildren, Abby, Kenzie, Jackson, Kendall, Greyson & Hayes Harvey.
A Celebration of Life gathering will occur on August 10th at 1pm at his daughter Kimberly Brown’s residence, located at 1725 Cosner Road in Forest Hill, MD.
