Edward Weigand Vogel, Sr. an Army veteran and retiree from Sweetheart Cup died October 7, 2022 at the age of 85 at the Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill, MD. Ed recently moved from the Perry Hall area to Harford County after being diagnosed with cancer and the passing of the love of his life, wife of 63 years, the late Barbara Elizabeth (Moulden) Vogel.
Ed joined the Army in January 1957 where he was stationed at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1958, the Army sent him and his new family to Germany. After being Honorably Discharged in 1960, they returned to Baltimore where they purchased a home in the Belair-Edison community, raised their three children and provided a temporary home for more than 30 foster children. Ed and Barb were communicants at Faith Lutheran Church and Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church in northeast Baltimore. Through the years, Ed worked for Martin Marietta, Roline Rubber, Life Like Products, Martin Brower, and eventually retired after 20 years of employment as a Warehouse Manager at Sweetheart Cup in Owings Mills. After retiring from Sweetheart Cup, Ed went to work part-time as a grounds keeper at Eagle's Nest Golf Course in Phoenix, MD where he enjoyed working outside and the occasional round of golf. In 2014, "Poppy" added the title of Ordained Minister to his list of accomplishments. He went on to marry three of his eight grandchildren.
When Ed wasn't working on the job, he enjoyed camping at Maryland State Game and Fish Association in White Marsh, traveling to Bedford Pennsylvania to the family cottage, playing golf, making golf clubs, and playing the guitar. He also loved traveling and most importantly doing all of these things with his beloved family and cherished friends. He was a proud left hander, enjoyed taking care of his house and property, a very hard worker and was not often found sitting unless he was enjoying a cigar and a whiskey on the back porch. You could also find him reading about American history, the Lord, and his German heritage. Later in life he enjoyed a wonderful trip to Germany with son, Ed Jr. and grandson, Eddie III. He also enjoyed collecting beer steins, painting by number, and painting the Bob Ross way. After moving to the Perry Hall area in 1990, he and Barb would walk at White Marsh Mall for exercise. Afterwards they would enjoy a cup of coffee while socializing with their fellow mall walking friends.
He is survived by his 95 year old brother, Albert "Bud" Vogel, three children, Marian "Jean" Weimer (Bill) of Jarrettsville MD, Edward Weigand Vogel, Jr. (Melanie) of Bel Air MD, and Tracy Elizabeth Lane (Doug) of Forest Hill MD. "Poppy" is also survived by 8 loving grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald Paul Vogel and Sarah Ann (Miller) Vogel; grandson, William Edward Weimer, as well as brother, Frederick William Vogel, sister, Ida Pauline Vogel and foster son, Raymond V. McCue.
