Joseph Matthew Carter, Sr., 87 years of age, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 at Bowers Hospice House. Born on December 22, 1932 in McCreery, WV, he was the son of the late Lawrence Daniel Carter and Doris Valentine Carter.
Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 67 years, Joyce McMillion Carter of the home; children, Joseph Matthew Carter, Jr and wife, Becky of Stanaford, Pamela Donnelly and husband, Danny of Mt. Hope, Randy Carter of Charlotte, NC, and Scott Carter and wife, Melody of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Stephanie Ruud and husband, Karl, Joseph Matthew Carter, III, Jami Stafford and husband, Nick, Danny Donnelly and wife, Ashlei, Jared Donnelly and wife, Amanda, Chloe Carter and Colton Carter; great-grandchildren, Cooper Ruud, Kaitlyn Stafford, Caleb Stafford, Tanner Donnelly, Trey Donnelly, Amelia Donnelly, Ainsley Donnelly, Aniston Donnelly and Jayden Donnelly; his brother, Robert Carter and wife, Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.
In his early years, Mr. Carter enjoyed golfing. He loved the outdoors, including camping and RV’s. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) for over 50 years and a member of Kilsyth Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Hope.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the request of the family, the visitation and service for Mr. Carter will be held privately. The Funeral Service for Mr. Carter will be held via Facebook Live on Blue Ridge Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens’ Facebook page beginning at 12:55 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Reverend Davey Duncan officiating. Entombment will follow the services in the Peace Mausoleum of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Matthew Carter, Danny Donnelly, Jared Donnelly, Nick Stafford, Karl Ruud and Dan Donnelly. Honorary Pallbearers are Cooper Ruud and Colton Carter.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Bowers Hospice House, especially Missy and Kim, and to the ICU staff at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for the love, care and support they provided Mr. Carter and his family.
