David A. Thompson, 92 of Coal City went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at his home with his daughter Jackie Moran and son Ronnie Thompson at his side. David was born on January 15, 1925 to the late Tommy Thompson and Florence Thompson. He served his country during the entire World War II and served in the US Navy on the Blue Ridge Command Ship 7th Fleet. He served from 1941 until 1945 and was in 5 landings from the North Atlantic (New Guinea) to the South Pacific (Australia). He received the Purple Heart Medal during his time served. After returning from the war he married Rosalie Ritter of Coal City on September 29, 1945 and were married for over 63 years. He was a member of the Coal City Community Church and devoted his life to his family. He committed over 40 years of his life to the Coal Mines retiring in the early 80’s from Cole Electric Co. In his leisure time he loved to hunt and always had a dog or two around. He loved ballgames including football, baseball and basketball. At one time, he coached his son’s little league team. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 3 sisters Mettie Walker, Elsie Jeffries, and Ida Cole. He is also preceded in death by 5 brothers Millard, Boyd, Clancy, Estil, and Bill Thompson. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Evelyn (Jackie) Moran and husband Jose’ of Beckley and his son Ronnie Thompson of Coal City; 2 granddaughters Stacy Lazo Deiss and husband Kevin of Charleston and Jill Thompson of Sophia; 2 great grandsons Rocco Lazzo and Jasper Deiss of Charleston; 2 great granddaughters Stella Rose Deiss of Charleston and Lillian Morton of Sophia; brother Cleve Miller and sister Effie. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care extended to their father from Hospice, nurses Serena and Andrea, CNAs Chris, Sam, and Debbie. They would also like to extend their special thanks to his caregivers Connie and Tammy. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 6-8 PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. A Funeral Service is scheduled for Thursday, January 11, 2018 beginning at 1 PM at the funeral home. David will be laid to rest following the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
