Betty Jean Stewart

She resided in Harper Heights, WV for most of her life. Betty met James Stewart at a revival service and they were soon married. She stayed at home raising her three children during the early years of their marriage. She and her Sister Ruby took the opportunity to go to nursing school; both graduated and became LPN’s. She spent many years working at Appalachian Regional Hospital and Southern WV clinic specializing in the OBGYN department until her retirement.

Betty was lovingly known as “Nana” to her children and grandchildren. She would always encourage all she came in contact to do their best in life and live for the Lord. She was an active minister and evangelist in the church and the community. She spent many hours volunteering at local community centers preschools and churches.

Betty was a longtime member of the Free Independent Holiness Churches Inc. along with her husband Bishop James Stewart. Their ministry had a lasting effect on family, friends, and loved ones. Betty loved family and always want it to stay in touch and help in any way she could.

In addition to her parents Betty was preceded in death by her spouse, Bishop James Oliver Stewart Sr.; daughter, Kathy; son, Jeff, 9 siblings, Jenny, Louise, Lorraine, Reva, Estelle, Russell, Arthur, Otis, and Herbert.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters, Ruby and Helen; son, James O. Stewart II and wife Jeannette; sons in Law, Jerry Smith and Butch Whitehead; grandchildren, Jerry Lee Jr., Martina, Jeffrey Jr., Aisha, Michael, Michele, James III and companion Sara, Joshua and companion Kaley, and Jared; great-grandchildren, Rasean, Khalil, Edward, Katherine, Jerry III, Samara, Nehemiah, Elisha, Zariyah, Vashawn Jr., Tyrah, Tania, Dakota, and Tamya; and great-great-grandchildren, Anayla and Ha’lani.

Visitation will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.

Funeral Services will be held at Free & Independent Holiness Church on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at 12:30 pm.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.

Jared Stewart, Joshua Stewart, Chris Stewart, Lee Smith Jr., James Stewart III, and Alex Moore will serve as pallbearers. Rasean Smith will serve as the honorary pallbearer.
