Betty was born on April 1, 1935, the first-born child of Robert Seth and Mable Massey Toney of Maple Fork. She was the granddaughter of Robert and Janie Toney and Walter and Grace Massey. Betty's parents provided a home that focused on the love of Christ. At the age of 11, she accepted Christ and was baptized at the Maple Valley Baptist Church. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Betty was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Dorothy Williams (Charles) and Verna Hatcher (Les).
Betty is survived by her four children: Frank B. Mann, III and wife Shelia Miller Mann, Robert Seth Mann and wife Linda Kincaid Mann and their daughters Rebecca Mann, Victoria Mann, Sarah Mann Springer (Dustin), and Seth's daughter Ashley Mann Edwards, Karen Mann Smith, and husband Clinton Smith and their daughter Kriston Smith Ellis (Wes), and Gregory H. Mann, and wife Rebecca Sobota Mann.
In 1978, Betty married James Q. Hartsog, adding two lovely girls, Jennifer Lynn Hartsog Tieche and husband Albert Tieche and their children Taylor Tieche and Samuel Tieche, and Kimberly Sue Hartsog Skaff and husband Greg Skaff and their children Megan Skaff Helms (Davy), Matt Skaff and Jacob Skaff (Samantha).
Their home was blessed to honor many family members over the years, including Fay Toney, Bessie Hartsog, and Tammy Williams Perdue. James and Betty are also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Taylor Edwards, Averie, Sofie and Garrett Ellis, James Finley and Emma Helms, and Lily James Skaff. She has two nephews and two nieces: Joey Voiers (d), Leslie Hatcher, Cynthia Williams, and Tammy Williams Perdue. She is a great aunt to the daughter of Joey Voiers, Cassie Conner (Jeremy), and their children Lela and Zeke.
Betty's passions were her love of God, music, and teaching. She held many roles in the church, including pianist, choir director, leader of a lady's prayer group, and Sunday School teacher. Betty loved being a teacher and spent her career working with students and teachers. Throughout her sixty-five years of teaching, she touched many lives. Betty was proud to have earned her Master's Degree from West Virginia University and was a celebrated published author.
The family extends special thanks to Debbie McDaniel, special friend and caregiver, and the kind and caring staff of Hospice of Southern WV.
A service celebrating Betty's life will be conducted at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Beckley, WV, on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Pat Haynes officiating. Graveside service to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, WV. Due to COVID and family health issues, it is necessary to limit the services to family members.
