Burmester. She was raised on a farm in Hampton along with her four brothers, Robert, Norlyn,
Dallas and Louis. Ione attended Hampton High School. In 1952, she graduated from Iowa State
College with a Bachelor of Arts. While attending ISC, she met her future husband, Paul
Frederickson. He was a meal server in Ione’s dorm and he always said he “picked” her
because she was the best looking girl without makeup. They married on December 21, 1953.
After that, they lived in Omaha and Baltimore while Paul served in the Army stateside. During
this time, Ione taught Home Economics and English at local high schools.
In 1955, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where Paul began his career as a Lumber
Salesman. Both Susan (1956) and Sarah (1959) were born there. Next, Paul took a job with
Boise Cascade and moved the family to Idaho where both Jane (1961) and Annie (1964) were
born. In 1966, the Frederickson family then transferred to Portland, Oregon, where they lived for
more than 40 years on Petty Grove Street. This transfer was facilitated by Boise Cascade
opening a division in Portland. They were moved there with several other families from Boise
and they remained very close friends over the years.
During this time, Ione was busy raising four daughters, teaching Home Economics Adult
Education classes in the evenings and taking part in Home Ec Club. She also was a leader of
Bluebirds and Campfire Girls. Additionally, she was very active within the church, first at Prince
of Peace and then at St. Matthew. Ione (and Paul) enjoyed working with the S.C.A.T. (Special
Church Action Team), was a member of the Code 5 Group, served as president of the women
at St. Matthew, was on the ALCW synod committee, produced two church cookbooks (Kitchen
Pickens), bell choir, Bible study, and was the founder of the St. Matthew Women’s Retreat in
1976 (a retreat that has been held annually to this day). Ione loved being involved and made
many dear, lifelong friends. Later, once her daughters started college, Ione went back to work
for CTL Property Management Company until the late 90s.
Both she and Paul loved the ocean, especially Cannon Beach where as a family, the
Frederickson's spent many a vacation at “Happy Hut.” In addition to her love of the ocean, she
enjoyed hunting for antiques, cookbook collector, Native American and Alaskan artwork, old
clocks that dad “got” to fix, crafts, old barns, sewing and quilting, as well as spending time with
family and her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling over the years; some of her favorite
vacations were business trips with Paul to Quebec, Key West and San Francisco. Other
memorable places included celebrating their 35th anniversary in Hawaii, going to Arizona, Bend
and Sisters, Oregon, and an Alaskan Cruise. Additionally, Ione took a trip to Poland with a
handchime ensemble representing the Oregon Synod-ELCA, went on a cruise in the
Mediterranean with fellow St. Matthew members, and especially treasured coming home to
Hampton to see her family and friends.
In 2010, Ione had a brain tumor removed which her family hoped was the reason behind
her “forgetfulness.” Unfortunately, this was not the case and Ione lived in memory care for the
last eight years until her strong heart finally gave out on January 21, 2019. Ione is survived by
her daughters, Susan Darm; Sarah (Dave) Lashua; Jane (Sean) O’Brien; 11 grandchildren and
five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul (2004), and daughter
Anne (2009). We will always remember Ione’s “happy go lucky” spirit, kind, giving heart and
sense of humor. She was so loved and will be greatly missed.
