Donald Joseph McCormick passed away Saturday morning, Sept 1, 2012, just 3 days before his 82nd birthday. Don is survived by his son Scott and his wife Tricia, and his son Gary and his wife Gloria. His 6 grandchildren are Matt, Nick, Chris, Jeran, Megan and Joseph. His 3 great grandchildren are Troy, Cole and Lilly. He is also survived by his brothers Jack and Denny. Don was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and his brother Jerry.
Don worked for the Northwest Natural Gas Company for over 40 years. He started in the Portland offices on a crew team laying pipelines, and worked his way up to Assistant to the President. In-between, he oversaw the Lincoln City District, the Eugene District and the Salem/Albany District. He also was Director of Human Resources before becoming Assistant to the President. Don felt the Joint Accord developed between the Company and the Labor Union was an important success in his professional career. Don enjoyed being part of Rotary in Portland and represented NW Natural Gas with the United Way.
For Don and Joyce, sports were a part of their life together. Don was always involved in coaching, especially baseball teams. He coached teams for both Scott and Gary in Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion and Semi-Pro. He touched a lot of lives through his coaching.
They were also avid golfers and enjoyed playing new courses when they traveled. They once put off buying a new car until they could check to see if both sets of golf clubs would fit in the trunk. Don was also an avid Blazer fan. He had season tickets every year until they moved out of the Memorial Coliseum. He still continued to follow them closely, even after that move. He also was a big supporter of the South Salem High School Saxon Softball team where Scott is the Varsity Coach and Western Oregon University Softball and Baseball where Megan and Joseph played ball. He often could be seen watching games down the foul lines, sometimes behind a fence, standing with his dog Benjm.
Don and Joyce always held a special place in their hearts for their dogs. And, they knew the importance of the Oregon Humane Society. They always tried to support the Society with their efforts and their contributions.
Finally, family always came first with Don. He loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids. We all remember the ice cream he would make on his birthday. Somehow it always tasted a little better when grandpa made it. We will miss you. We love you.
A memorial service will be September 6, 2012, at 12:00 pm, at Beaverton First United Methodist Church, 12555 SW 4th St., Beaverton, Oregon. Private family burial at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard, Oregon.
