Doug was a longtime resident of Lumberton, Texas, after living several years in Beaumont, where he served his community as a police officer. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and building things. He loved to work and was always finding ways to occupy his time. He served his country faithfully as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War where he worked as a mechanic. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing baseball, softball, basketball and dominos...he was very competitive, and always a prankster.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ruth, and by his sister Charlene.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tonya Boyd of Hankamer, Texas and Tina Wakefield and her husband Dennis of Wisconsin; his sister Dorleen Bickley and her husband David of Lumberton, Texas; brother-in-law Eddie Hougesen, his nieces Meshell Heartfield and her husband Clint of Sour Lake, Texas; and Missy Hougesen; his nephews Darrell Richmond and Frances of China, Texas; and Justin Hougesen; his grandchildren Kendall Strange, DannaRay Strange, Christopher Wakefield, Melissa Wakefield Goins, and Nita Wakefield. He is also survived by his 7 great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers are David Bickley, Clint Heartfield, Darrell Richmond, Dan Howell, Bill Wilson, Edwin Marcus, and Greg Stanley. Honorary pallbearers include Dennis Boteler, Justin Hougesen, Tommy Hougesen, and Eddie Hougesen.
A Gathering of Family and Friends be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas 77703, followed by a Celebration of Doug's Life at 2:00 PM.
Doug will be laid to rest in Tanner Cemetery, Burkeville, TX immediately following the services at Forest Lawn.
