He was born in Pittsburg, Texas, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1937. Bill was the only child of Lloyd and Eunice Carpenter. He attended school in Pittsburg, graduating from Pittsburg High School in 1956. His family moved to Crosby, Texas, in 1957. He reported for service in the U.S. Army in October of 1960. Most of his military time was served at Fort McClelland, Alabama, where he became an Instructor at the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) Warfare School. SGT Carpenter split his time between military duties and stock car racing on the weekends. After his Army service, Bill returned to Crosby, where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Martin. For the next 56 years, they made their home in Baytown, Texas. Bill worked at the Dupont La Porte plant for 33 years before retiring as a Mechanical Supervisor in 1997. He continued his service to the industry and the community as a Safety Instructor at the Houston Area Safety Council.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter, Lisa Carpenter Wheeler; his Son-in-Law, Clay Wheeler; and his Grandson, Jack Wheeler; all of Baytown. A surviving aunt, Kathryn Duncan, resides in Pittsburg. He is also survived by many cousins and other relatives.
