Ruth Emily Morris Porter was surrounded by family as she peacefully passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Houston Methodist Hospital. She was diagnosed just last week with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Ruth was born to Julious Aubrey Morris and Ruth Edith Monroe Morris on July 3, 1928, in Galveston, Texas. She graduated from Ball High in Galveston and Lee College in Baytown. While attending college, she met her future husband.
Ruth married Robert Richard Porter, Jr. on October 6, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Baytown. They were married for 56 years before his passing in June 2013. They were the proud and loving parents of three daughters, Cari, Jeanne and Nancy. Ruth worked for the Bay Area Rehabilitation Center, retiring in 1996 after 25 years of service.
She was a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a tireless volunteer who gave generously of her time to her family, church and community.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, parents, step-mother Millie, brothers Julious, Monroe and James, and granddaughter Jennifer Greenfield. She is survived by and will be dearly missed by her children, Cari (Mark) Greenfield of Jewell, Iowa, Jeanne (Kim) Quillin of Danville, California, and Nancy Porter of Houston; grandchildren Justin Greenfield and fiancé Jennifer, Ashley (Gary) Meier and Cody Greenfield, Jennifer and Catherine Quillin, and great-granddaughter Charlotte Laine Meier; and sister Gloria Thorkveen. She is also survived by many loving and special cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 712 Schilling Avenue, Baytown, on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
