Paul David Bohannon, 87, of New Waverly, TX, formerly Baytown, was born August 11, 1923 in Washington County, AR to Andrew Doyle and Ruby Lillian Baucom Bohannon and went to meet his Lord Sunday, September 19, 2010 at his home.
He was a U. S. Army WWII veteran, serving from June 1, 1941 until July 18, 1945 with the 5th Army, Battery A, 936th Field Artillery Battalion. As a gun crewman with the 864th Medium Artillery, he participated in the battles and campaigns of Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines and Po Valley, receiving four Bronze Stars for the Naples-Foggia campaign as well as three service ribbons. He worked as a nurse while attending the University of Arkansas and worked for Rohm & Haas in Deer Park as an operator from 1957 until his retirement in 1988.
Paul loved the Lord and served Him by example and service as a deacon for over 50 years at Stewart Heights Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church in Baytown and as deacon emeritus at First Baptist Church in New Waverly. He loved reading his bible, praying daily for each family member, and singing the hymns of the church. He and his wife Madell also helped to establish the chapel near the vacation home they built together on Wild Horse Mesa near San Luis, CO. His favorite pastimes included reading, enjoying nature, spending time with family, and taking his grandchildren fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Opal Wallen; brother, Andrew Doyle Bohannon, Jr.; and daughters-in-law, Peggy Lucas Bohannon and Gala Potter Bohannon. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Iva Madell Doughtie Bohannon of New Waverly; daughters and son-in-law, Iva Paulette O'Sullivan of New Waverly and Barbara and John Isom of Waller; sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin and Sharon Bohannon, Robert Bohannon, and Julius and Lori Bohannon, all of Baytown; sister, Violet Rose ""Cookie"" Miller of Lincoln, MO; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, September 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Chuck Taylor officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery in Baytown.
Serving as pallbearers will be Eric O'Sullivan, James Bohannon, Anthony Bohannon, Danny Isom, Jason Bohannon, and Adam Bohannon. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Wallen, John Isom, Josh Nguyen, and Jared Allsen.
