Willie was as awesome of a person as any could be.  He came from an incredible family who were incredible people all.  I never new a family as awesome as the Moreno family.

I was pretty daring when I unplugged the juke box @ a local bar on cedar bayou, Willie saved me by whistling The William Tale Overture followed by The Fishing Hole ,the crowd was taken , I'll never forget  him. 

Willie told  my daughters 99' pre k class of how he came to be a whistler . Working with his father who was always whistling.  They were fascinated 

Allison,  I was just thinking of you old friend and tried to get your contact info online and came across this very sad new of Willie.  Please contact me when you are able.  I am so very sorry for your loss, Willie was such a bright light .

The best time in marching band was when I was in a squad with Willie and Joe.  We were laughing all the time.  One time during a show, we didn't hear the drum majors' whistles, and kept on marching away from the rest of the band, oh how hard we laughed!  Of course, Mr. Forque didn't see the humour, and our squad was split up, but, my what fun it was to be around Willie!  The sweetest Chaplain.

I was saddened to hear the news of Willie's passing. I have wonderful memories of him while growing up in Lakewood. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Moreno family today.

My condolences to the Moreno family. I to remember Willie as such an important part of the “Famous Robert E Lee Band”. I remember him as a very friendly, caring and helpful guy. Always there to help. Such a great guy and such a tremendous loss to all who knew and loved him.

I am overwhelmed with sorrow... Willie truely was my ""best friend in all the world"" growng up. From Travis Elementary to Lee High school we were inseperable. Our lives took us on different paths but he has always been a part of who I am. ""The Lakewood Gang"" will miss his presence and his smile! I will never forget the time the Lee Band was convoying to Sterling High School for marching practice for a joint halftime we were doing at the Oilers game in the Astrodome. Willie was riding in the front seat of my parents old station wagon and I hit a pothole and the glovebox flew open - immediately Wille threw up his hands and hollered ""I GIVE!!"" We were all laughing so hard I almost had to pull over. To Martha and all the kids - wow - I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sorry that I did not find out until this morning. May you all be blessed with God's healing touch and may His angels surround you with their wings. Willie - I love you man!

Willie took me to my first Brigadier Ball. He was such a nice guy. The Moreno family were close friends of my family (Portis). I cherish those memories. My heart goes out to you all. Heaven has gained another angel.

My condolences to all of Willie's family. Willie was my roommate during college and I remember his enthusiasm, decency, and love for his family. I also recall fondly his puns, whistling and amazing ability to send playing cards sailing accurately across the room. I also recall with gratitude the kindness and hospitality his family showed me as I adjusted to college far from my Virginia home.

I particularly recall when Willie came with me to visit Washington DC on a break. While visiting the US Mint, he convinced Larry Johnson and me that he had stolen a $100 bill from the premises. We were terrified of being thrown into jail and only learned later it was one of Willie's elaborate jokes.

I will never for get him.

I went through elementary and middle school with Willie.  While I had not seen him in many years, I won't forget his friendship and his positive, beaming smile.  A testament to how he impressed others: my wife met Willie exactly once, at the REL/RSS 20 year reunion eighteen years ago.  When I told her that an old friend from Baytown had died and mentioned his name, she said, ""Oh no!  The Whistler Guy?""
I never knew Willie as 'The Whistler', only as a good friend--but he always made an impression.  Our sincere condolences to the Moreno family for this loss.

I am so said to hear about this. Willie will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with the family for peace.

Even though I didn't stay in touch over the years, I thought of Willie often. I am so glad I was able to spend some time with him earlier this year. I will miss my friend. My heart goes out to Allison and the rest of Willie's family.

All who ever met Willie were enriched for having made his acquaintance.  He was a man of nearly limitless talent and boundless good cheer, whose quick wit and warm smile would brighten anyone’s day. Our guide and protector throughout childhood, none of us really understood why our parents called Will Moreno ""Little Willie.""

True, his father was a great man, but Will's own presence was so vast that other souls orbited around him.  I do not think he ever fully understood his power to delight us in good times and comfort us in bad.

I'm not sure I would have survived to adulthood without him.

Willie was an awesome human being and a great friend. Funny, lovable guy. He was a great singer, but his whistling was something else...anything from ""Flight of the Bumblebee"" to the theme song from Mayberry and the Andy Griffith Show. It was so much fun to listen to Willie do his thing and he brought rounds and rounds of applause with every tune. My deepest and dearest condolences go out to his wonderful family. Willie was the Leader of the Moreno kids growing up in our neighborhood.  The memories with him and that family are something I will treasure for the rest of my life.  Willie will be missed but never forgotten.  Whistle in Heaven for everyone!  RIP my friend!

Willie was one of the sweetest people I've ever met. His love of family and friends will always be an inspiration. Others could take lessons from his life.

Willie was a great whistler, but I don't how many of you knew that Willie was also an awesome singer too. We have spent many a day sitting around the house or in the studio just playing and singing. Whistling Willie and I have been friends for over 20 yrs. I never saw him without a bright smile. The melodies that came from him when he whistled were soothing to the soul. He will be dearly missed but remain in my heart and soul for the rest of my life. A beautiful human being and a wonderful friend. So sorry for the loss BUT I carry the most wonderful memories of Willie. We truly were blessed to have had him in our lives. He will be dearly missed and loved forever. Peace be with his family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Willie was such a sweet guy.  Being in band with him at R.E.L. was such a hoot!  I will tell you this story:
At one of our band parties (can't remember whose house) we were playing Twister. During one of my ""twists"", I think my elbow almost hit Willie's eye.  All of a sudden he stops the game and said ""She bumped me and I lost my contact!""  I was HORRIFIED (I was shy in high school)....I crawled around on that mat and floor for probably 20 minutes before Willie cracked up and said he didn't wear contacts!  He ALWAYS made me laugh!

I knew Whistling Willie from when he came around some of the bars years ago doing what he did best. The whole bar would get silent & just listen to the pure clear beautiful music coming out of his mouth. He loved what he did & he was great at it. He would always get applaudes & people loved him for sharing his talent. He was well loved by many for his sweet nature & kindness. Willie will surely be missed by many!!! May God bless his family & know that he is whistling for the Lord now!! What joy he his bringing to Heaven!! Prayers to his family & many friends!

I am so sorry for your loss. Though I did not know him personally, I still remember hearing Whistling Willie perform back in the early 70's.

Like so many of you who have posted, I have known Willie since elementary school .  A great sense of humor, smile, and generous positive energy are qualities Willie possessed in fistfuls! I did not know him well after REL days, but a word I believe best describes Willie is "" original"". The young man I knew was not afraid to be 100% himself! I am so saddened by his loss! My prayers go out to the Moreno family.

I met Willie in 3rd grade at Travis Elementary School, and we were in school together at Baytown Junior High, Lee High School and at Rice University.  Willie was the happiest person I ever met.  He never had a cross word for anyone, always made people happy to be around him, and always looked at the positive side of everything.  If we had more men like Willie in the world,  it would be a much better place.  We are all lucky to have known him, and we will miss him.

My sincere condolences to the Moreno family.  I had not seen Willie in many years, but I have wonderful memories of him from our high school days together in the Lee band. His great sense of humor was infectious, and he was always a lot of fun to be around.  What a great guy!  He will be missed.

Willie was a great man. He was inventive, intelligent, extremely pleasant and easy going. He was also fiercely loyal and probably the most fun of anyone I have ever known. Willie always had positive thoughts about others and life itself. The last time I spoke with him was many years ago but I was touched by his continued warmth and sincerity even then. Three days ago my wife and I saw a fish bowl behind a wall like a porthole and I told her about Willie and I building, as he proudly proclaimed, ""the greatest entrance to the REL band banquet ever!"" Actually, he built it and I helped. I will never forget Willie gargling with molasses and playing the William Tell Overture on his face. My life has definitely been richer having been friends with Willie in high school. I am so sorry his family has lost him but I hope they can know what a light he was to others.

Willie was one of my former students.  I taught several of his brothers and sisters.  He always had that beautiful smile when he saw me.  May our Lord God be with the family and hold them in His loving arms.
