James A. Shugart, 77, of Broaddus, TX passed away on December 12, 2020. He was born in Baytown, TX on April 25, 1943 to Stella and Lee Shugart. He graduated from Lee High School in 1961. He then served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years on the USS Constellation, the USS Ranger and the USS Forrestal. He was married to the love of his life, Maria West, in 1967.
He worked for Dupont/Laporte for 31 years as a pipefitter and had many great friends. He retired to Lake Sam Rayburn in 1998 and loved to fish, garden and watch the hummingbirds. He was the rock of the neighborhood as he took care of many of the neighbors as well as their properties. He was at his best when working for others as he loved to help out whenever he could. He was also a member of the Attoyac VFD for 21 years, serving as fire chief for 9 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stella and Lee Shugart; brothers, Charles A. Shugart and Thomas A. Shugart; sisters, Peggy Langston, Mary Mayfield, Treasa Derrett; and son-in-law, Matt Hudspeth. He is survived by his wife, Maria Shugart; son, Kirk Shugart and his wife Amy Shugart; daughter, Jamie Hudspeth; grandchildren, Kelsey Hudspeth, Cole Hudspeth, Sydney Shugart, Seth Shugart, Sam Shugart; two great grandchildren, Eli and Anson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 5-8 pm on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Navarre Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2444 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown, TX 77521. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Sterling White Cemetery, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Rd., Highlands, TX 77562. Serving as pallbearers are Cole Hudspeth, Seth Shugart, Sam Shugart, Chris Langston, Jerrell Mayfield, and Graham Yarborough. Honorary pallbearers are Hallie Barber, Tommy Nordstrom and Revis Whitmire.
