Jack was a loving husband, father of three, and “Pops” to six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Throughout his eventful life he was a surveyor, custom home builder, racehorse trainer and owner, and operator for Shell and Chevron. Some notable moments were winning third place in the All-American Futurity, building some of the first custom homes in major neighborhoods throughout Baytown and Crosby, and the birth of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Joan Saunders, and his son-in-law, Chris Martin. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda Diane Saunders of Baytown, his daughters, Lauri Martin of Anahuac, and Brooke Oliphant and husband Chip of Highlands, and his son, Ryan Saunders and wife Nina of Baytown. He was known to his grandchildren as Pops. His beloved grandchildren are Krysta Watson, Jason Martin, Sebastian Saunders, Griffin Saunders, Dax Oliphant, Dane Oliphant and great-grandchildren Riley and Laney Watson, and Crew Martin. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Freeman of Houston, and his nephew Cullen Freeman of Houston, and niece Judy Ann Frieden; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, 3116 N. Alexander Dr., Baytown, TX 77520. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Earthman Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8624 Garth Road, Baytown, TX 77521.
