Elsie was born to Raymond and Ella “Gertrude” Watson of Wallisville, Texas on August 23, 1927. She was the youngest of 7 children.
Elsie met the love of her life, Bill Dunman, in early 1940s. From 1941-1945 Bill was a member of the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After his service in the military, Bill and Elsie, or “Babe”, as he lovingly called her, were married June 26, 1947. They built a life together in Baytown, Texas where Bill began his 35-year tenure with Exxon and Elsie a homemaker. Bill and Elsie had three children: daughter Carolyn Toups, sons Glenn Dunman and Ray Dunman. Elsie went on to work at Sears as a Catalog Ordering Operator for 18 years.
Bill and Elsie enjoyed family time, playing Wahoo and 42 with dear friends. They were members of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church. Together they created a strong foundation of family values, work ethic, and love that has proven fruitful generation after generation. They were married 52 years.
Elsie is known to most as “Granny”, an endearing name she embraced with such affection, care, and honor. Granny embodied unconditional love. The only requirement to her loving you, was meeting you. There was not a friend, relative, caretaker, or child she didn’t call “her baby”. Granny was caring, spiritual, and showed the love of Jesus to those around her. It’s always been said that “Granny couldn’t hurt a fly”. She was gentle and affectionate, always giving a hug to anyone she met. To know her, was to know that you were prayed for, loved, and accepted.
Of all her treasures here on Earth, it was being a Granny that she cherished the most. Her face would glow when she saw her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their phone call, visit, or a note in the mail would bring her so much joy. The memories with Granny are some of the fondest of her grandchildren.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Gertrude Watson; son Glenn Dunman; husband Bill Dunman; three brothers Ralph, Mitchell, and Ed Watson; and three sisters Mary O’Brian, Myrtle Myzell, and Faye Trant; and son-in-law Gary Toups.
She is survived by her loving son and care taker Ray Dunman and his wife and devoted daughter-in-law Leigh Dunman; daughter Carolyn Toups; grandson Tyler Dunman “Dandy” and wife Kimberly Dunman; granddaughter Allison Knable “Honey Bunny” and husband Tim Knable; granddaughter Tiffany Toups; granddaughter Chantelle Marquis and husband Randy Marquis, great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Abigail, and Hannah Dunman; Dylan, Emily, and Katelyn Knable; Savannah and Presley Marquis; and an abundance of relatives and friends she held dear to her heart.
A special thank you to the staff, nurses, and doctors of St. James House of Baytown, TX and Mountbatten House of Highlands, TX for the love and care they showed our Granny and our family during her final years.
There will be a private graveside service on December 5, 2022 under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home of Baytown. Pastor Josh Joines of Faith Family Church of Baytown will preside over the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choosing.
